6 de Mayo trip to Mexico
Take all that love from Mexico defeating the French during our civil war on Cinco de Mayo into your friday evening.
I’m making a big push this Friday to bring people down to Tijuana. It is a fundraiser for the Instituto Binacional Fronterizo, that needs money to help keep their doors open supporting projects that help struggling indigenous communities along the border as well as connecting people across the border through the arts. If you’ve ever wanted to come down to Tijuana with me, this would be the time to do it and have a safe and comfortable place to stay. Check out the rooms on the link below.

Hostel stay: $15, shared dormitory, bar tour of new Tijuana is free, preparty at the hostel is byob or gdtoabt (go down to Oxxo and buy tecates)
We are raising money by having people stay at Segundo Mundo, the hostel and cultural center where all these projects are launched from.
Safety
Many of you might be scared of the recent news coming from Tijuana, but if you use common sense and stay in the commercial areas of the city, you will be just as safe as when you go visit bars in Los Angeles or San Diego. I don’t mean to ignore the violence, but I have been traveling to Tijuana for the last four years, even during some of the sensationalist media reports and U.S. travel advisories that made it seem as if you would be in the middle of a firefight as soon as you crossed the city.
The Payoff
I’ve made great friends in the city and I’ve been witness to the blossoming art scene that has taken root on Avenida Revolucion, which used to be nothing more than a caricature of real Mexican culture. Instaed of reggaeton and people pouring tequila into your mouth blowing whistles you get bars like Indie Go, Mous tache, Don Loope and la chupiteria that have djs from LA, Mexico City and Colombia spinning one after the other until 11 in the morning—(you will be on your own after 7–thats my record in tj), and you realize that there are kids that have stuff in common with you down there, that like the same music as you do and you begin to think how amazing and european we could get by being transborder.
Let me know if you are interested and I can answer all of your other questions, you’d really be doing something positive and you will get an amazing experience that inspires you for at least a year. If you can’t make Friday, but want to do another night down there, we can definitely work something out. Your support in bringing about the future is appreciated. It would be great to have a night where my Mexican friends and American friends got together and bonded over making fun of how it looks like I dye my hair–i can’t help that my eyebrows grow in a different color.
We will meet at 9 on the U.S. side of the border at the gate entrance to Mexico at San Ysidro, we will be crossing on foot.

More Info on prices and tips on the town
15 for hostel
5 dollars each for gas in a packed car
2.50 per beer at bars (not tipping is accepted in Mexico! I think ! or all the bartenders down there think I’m an asshole!)
1.25 for tacos that will make you think that there is no such thing as Mexican food in the U.S.-this part will most likely be at 4 in the morning which will make you question why you are limited to ordering that slamburger at denny’s after 4 in the morning in the U.S.
if you don’t feel like spending the night, you can do the tour for $10 dollars
*you don’t have to change your dollars into pesos
*you DO need a passport to cross back comfortably
*you will feel really awkward if you wear shorts and sandals out to the bars and request Daddy Yankee at the dj booth while trying to freak dance
*if you want to practice your spanish, tell the person you are talking to that you want to practice your spanish (in spanish) so that they don’t use their immaculate English on you, Spanglish should be kept at a minimum, but it is probably inevitable
*you can use the word ‘wey’ as in dude, but you have to pay that person ten pesos if they are a local **just joking
